What is raphe pterygomandibularis?

The raphe pterygomandibularis is a small ligament that connects the pterygoid hamulus (a small bony projection) to the mandible (lower jaw bone) at the posterior end of the mylohyoid line (a bony ridge on the inner surface of the mandible). It forms a triangular shape and serves as a landmark for the inferior alveolar nerve block, a common dental anesthesia technique. Dysfunction of this ligament can result in pain and discomfort in the jaw and surrounding areas.
